1. Magnetoencephalography and positron emission tomography studies of a patient with auditory agnosia caused by bilateral lesions confined to the auditory radiations.
Match Strength: 14.962

The aim of this study was to investigate auditory cortex function in the context of auditory stimuli in a patient with auditory agnosia due to bilateral lesions confined to the auditory radiations. A male patient experienced mild left temporal hemiplegia because of right putaminal hemorrhage at the age of 43 years. Thereafter he recovered completely but hypertension persisted. When he was 53 years old, he suffered left putaminal hemorrhage and went into a coma. After recovering from the coma and right hemiplegia he could hear but could not discriminate speech sounds. Brain CT and MRI ... Read More »

2. Low frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation improves source monitoring deficit in hallucinating patients with schizophrenia.
Match Strength: 14.475

Auditory hallucinations have been associated with a disruption in monitoring one's own speech suggesting an autonoetic agnosia in schizophrenia. This deficit can be measured by a source monitoring task. Low frequency transcranial magnetic stimulations (rTMS) applied to the left temporoparietal cortex can inhibit cortical areas involved both in autonoetic agnosia (which means 'the inability to identify self-generated mental events') and in auditory hallucinations (AH) phenomena. Although improvements in AH have been repeatedly reported following rTMS treatment, effects on autonoetic agnosia ... Read More »

3. Neuropathology of auditory agnosia following bilateral temporal lobe lesions: a case study.
Match Strength: 10.560

Our patient was first diagnosed with auditory agnosia following his second cerebral vascular accident (CVA) in 1975 when he was 37 years old. Comprehensive follow-up examinations of auditory function were periodically conducted until his sudden death 15 years later. His brain was studied postmortem for neuropathology. Initial pure-tone audiometry revealed moderate sensorineural hearing loss in the right ear and mild sensorineural hearing loss in the left ear. However, repeated pure-tone audiometry revealed that thresholds became progressively poorer over time, bilaterally. Speech audiometry of ... Read More »

4. A Case of Auditory Agnosia with Impairment of Perception and Expression of Music: Cognitive Processing of Tonality.
Match Strength: 10.381

There is fairly general agreement that the melody and the rhythm are the independent components of the perception of music. In the theory of music, the melody and harmony determine to which tonality the music belongs. It remains an unsettled question whether the tonality is also an independent component of the perception of music, or a by-product of the melody and harmony. We describe a patient with auditory agnosia and expressive amusia that developed after a bilateral infarction of the temporal lobes. We carried out a detailed examination of musical ability in the patient and in control ... Read More »

5. "Sequence Agnosia" in Balint's Syndrome: Defects in Visuotemporal Processing after Bilateral Parietal Damage.
Match Strength: 7.222

Balint's syndrome is characterized by visuospatial dysfunction, with failure to attend to multiple objects in space and poor spatial localization manifested as impaired reaching and saccadic targeting. Less investigated in this disorder is perceptual processing along the dimension of time. We studied the performance of a patient with Balint's syndrome on two oddity paradigms in which she had to indicate which of three objects was different in color, shape, or structure. Her initial difficulty with processing multiple objects present simultaneously in different locations recovered, but she had ... Read More »

7. The perceptions of students in the allied health professions towards stroke rehabilitation teams and the SLP's role.
Match Strength: 6.337

The purpose of this study was to determine the perceptions and knowledge of final-year speech-language pathology (SLP), physical and occupational therapy (PT, OT) students toward stroke rehabilitation teams and the SLPs' roles on them. The investigators adapted a survey developed by (Felsher & Ross, 1994) and administered it to 35 PT, 35 OT, and 35 SLP final year students (n=105). We found that the students preferred the transdisciplinary team approach and agreed that the advantages of teamwork were the exchange of ideas, opportunities for participatory learning, and holistic treatment. ... Read More »

8. The association between developmental handicaps and traumatic brain injury during pregnancy: an issue that deserves more systematic evaluation.
Match Strength: 6.189

AIMS: Trauma during pregnancy is commonly viewed as benign for the foetus when the delivery occurs normally. This study revisits that point of view. METHOD: We included eighteen patients having a neurological handicap with an anamnesis of an accident during pregnancy and a follow-up sufficient to determine a definite outcome. RESULTS: Pregnancy outcome and observed management. Foetal abnormalities were detected in six cases between the first and the thirteenth day after the trauma. Emergency delivery or rapid birth after signs of foetal distress occurred in five cases. One baby died soon after ... Read More »
